The third place with the most suicides in the world
The Aokigahara Forest in Japan is famous to be “the perfect place to die“. It is the third most popular place in the world for suicide. It is a fact that since the 1950s, Japanese businessmen have entered and at least 500 of them have not left. There is a rate of increase varying between 10 and 30 per year. Recently, these numbers have increased again, with a record of 78 suicides in 2002 and 105 bodies in 2003.
The Japanese spiritualists believe that Aokigahara’s trees generate a paranormal activity. They help and advice the people before entering the forest. In addition, due to the area’s volcanic soil, the compasses being rendered useless.
We inform you that if you enter the forest it is unlikely to encounter anyone once inside. Every year they find dozens of corpses, for this reason, the authorities have discontinued publishing the suicide numbers in order to avoid more misfortunes.
Local population says that they can easily recognise the three types of visitors: trekkers interested in scenic vistas of Mount Fuji, the curious hoping for a glimpse of the macabre and those souls who don’t plan on leaving.
Also, according to some reports, forest workers must carry the bodies to the local police station. They are put in a special room, due to some people believe that if a corpse is left alone, it is very bad luck for the yurei (ghost) of the suicide victims.
Finally, if you want to visit the forest, we warn you to be careful and inform yourself about everything. Ask the population to receive advice about this place when you visit Japan.
